When someone says RPG now a day its only natural that the first game that comes to mind is Final Fantasy. And why not? This is a series that has been around since the days of the NES and continues today. More specifically Square-Enix’s Final Fantasy XII, which after a year hiatus, has finally appeared. Like its brethren, it is certainly nothing short of a gaming masterpiece. Though the story does seem a bit awkward and the style of play is vastly different from every other traditional Final fantasy. It’s one of these most impressive games on the PS2 in its life span and must have for any fan of RPG’s.
Story 10/10
Now the story is new in the game, but amazingly it’s based in a world that is not new to the fans of the franchise. The world known as Ivalice. It's a world that was originally explored in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Gameboy Advance. The PS2 story is a little strange because it doesn’t center around the main character Vaan. Rather, the game focuses around the secondary Character Princess Ashe. Vaan’s story is to become a sky pirate and escape the now imperial controlled lands and to lead a free life in the sky. After his first attempt at pirating, he is caught up with actual sky pirates. Balthier, a sort of Captain Jack Sparrow of the skies, and Fran, a Veria which is a race of rabbit people with a Norse accent, who has an ethereal connection to the land. After Vaan and Balthier’s chance meeting over the same treasure, they get caught up in a planned rebellion attack on the new Consul of the royal city Rabanastre Vayne Solidor lead by Ashe. Ashe is leading the resistance against the Archadian Empire which took over not only her kingdom Dalmasca, but killed both her father and her newlywed husband Rasler. The two of them are joined together by fate both being on the run from the imperial forces. Now as stated at the beginning, this isn’t really Vaan’s story at all. Though he is central character in the game, he’s merely a supporting character in the story. Then again, there are a lot of new things in this game. Honestly the best part about the story is that this is going about it a very intelligent way of telling it. The game has very witty humor supplied mostly by Balthier and Fran and never resorts to cliche slapstick. Thou Vaan did try once, it was quickly shut down and Vaan was pretty much torn to shreds by everyone in the party for the joke. So you won’t find any stupid humor like teens calling each other chicken wusses. Or the story being bogged down with guys with big swords with abandonment issues and identity crises.
