So you go to this crazy party with all your friends, you are having the time of your life. Out of nowhere, some drifter busts in, steals everyone's soul, turns you into little cell phone sized cars racing to save your soul. Wait what did I just say? Yeah its far fetched I know but just roll with it for now.
Pocket Racers from Konami puts you behind the wheel of tiny cars and racing for your soul. Would this be like Mortal Kombat but with race cars? As a kid growing up I always wanted to get in my little cars and jump the gap between my desk and nightstand. Does this game fill that void? Well lets take a look.
Story 2/10
I really want to know who came up with the story of this game. Stealing your soul and to add insult to injury, you become a tiny car. Just reading the back of the case and watching the intro was enough to get a verbal “WTF” and chuckle out of me. If you can get past the odd story we can get down to the graphics.
Graphics 4/10
Let's go back to1995: the PlayStation is launched. The graphics on this game come very close to Micro Machines V3 but with a little flair. Everything seems to be a sharp square--even the pop can you whiz by on the second floor of the house. The visual effects from turbos and missiles have little to no wow factor as well.
I know you cannot expect much out of the PSP but given the fact that it is in fact more powerful than the PS1, I would like to see at least a visual difference in the graphics. If you showed anyone this game you could easily say it looks just like a PS1 port.
Sound 5/10
The sounds on this game are like that on many games, the norm. Basically the cars engine sounds like a mini engine as it should. There is an upbeat techno song that plays throughout the game which seems to be a 5 second loop. Overall the sounds in this game don't hold it together.
Adding the ability to play your own music from the memory stick would give this game some higher marks on this category and would save the player from the monotonous techno music.
